Post2: Influences in Art Practice(Lina)

1. Five artists

  Salah Elmur

Cindy Sherman

Miranda July

Lucy Raven

Ai Weiwei

2. What were the themes the artists addressed about making work

Across the interviews, several themes appeared repeatedly:
• Identity and storytelling (Salah Elmur, Cindy Sherman)
• Experimentation and curiosity (Miranda July)
• Time, perception, and technology (Lucy Raven)
• Art as communication or activism (Ai Weiwei)
Salah Elmur discussed painting as a way of preserving memory, culture, and everyday life. Cindy Sherman explored identity as performance, showing how photography can construct fictional personalities. Miranda July focused on play, vulnerability, and trying new creative paths without fear of failure. Lucy Raven talked about process, research, and how images shape understanding of the world. Ai Weiwei emphasized art as social responsibility and a form of questioning authority.
Together, the artists showed that art can be personal, political, experimental, and conceptual at the same time.

3. What were the challenges the artists faced in making their work?
Many of the artists described challenges such as:
• Overcoming fear of failure or uncertainty
• Developing a unique visual language
• Working with complex materials or processes
• Addressing social or political topics responsibly
• Maintaining creative confidence
Miranda July talked about not always knowing what she is doing when starting something new. Cindy Sherman described the challenge of constantly inventing new characters. Lucy Raven discussed the technical difficulty of large-scale film and installation work. Ai Weiwei spoke about political restrictions influencing his artistic practice. These challenges showed that struggle is a normal part of creating meaningful work.

4. What were the inspirations you drew from the artists?
One major inspiration was seeing how differently artists approach their work. There is no single “correct” process.
I was inspired by:
• Salah Elmur’s use of simple imagery to tell powerful stories
• Cindy Sherman’s transformation and role-playing
• Miranda July’s willingness to experiment
• Lucy Raven’s attention to detail and research
• Ai Weiwei’s fearless expression of ideas
These artists showed that art can come from observation, imagination, personal history, or social issues

5. What would you like to incorporate into your own work after watching these videos?

After watching these interviews, I would like to:
• Take more creative risks
• Experiment with new materials or formats
• Focus more on personal storytelling
• Spend more time developing ideas before starting
• Be more confident sharing my perspective
I also want to try beginning projects without worrying about the final result, similar to how Miranda July described experimentation as part of discovery. Watching these artists made me realize that process, curiosity, and persistence are just as important as technical skill.

One work from Ai Weiwei that I enjoy is "With Wind." 2014
I am drawn to this work because of the bright colors and the various colors. In my work, I use lots of colors.
