Week 2 - influences in Art practice

1. The five artists I chose to write about from the videos are

- Sarah Sze

- Barry McGee

- Gaberial Orozco

-Theaster Gates

- Julie Mehretu

2. - What were the themes the artists addressed about making work?

Sarah wanted to create form of art that accelerated speed through space at the bottom level subway

- Barry McGee is a influential graffiti artist who uses his art in a positive direction instead of making it vandalism.

-Gaberial Orozco teaches Spanish and art through exchange and open communication between others who are still learning.

-Theaster Gates has shown that collecting personal and valuable items is form of art and that collecting constitutes one person’s way of seeing the world.

-Julie Mehretu expresses her abstraction through a mural without a direction where to begin or end without a composition and it became an additive process to keep going.

3. What were the challenges the artists faced in making their work?

- Sarah faces a challenge that everyone won’t be able to see her work from an underground station level.

- Barry had trouble trying to his own form of graffiti art might not be suitable for an exhibition.

- Gaberial’s work was located in the 3rd floor in an unused office below the commercial gallery and the interactions was through the market and institutions.

-Theaster had struggled cataloging the black space when the phenomena of the everyday is changing.

- Julie has struggled with putting together the mural and what exactly it should be while mixing all types of mediums.

4- What were the inspirations you drew from the artists?

The inspiration takeaways from these artists is that they present their own mediums and their unique styles of art in the public eye and going out of their way to continue their passion projects with determination and creativity.

5. What were the things you would like to incorporate into your own work after watching these videos?

After watching the videos, I’d like to incorporate themes in my artwork and conveys a message to the audience, I always to present storytelling messages in many pieces of my artwork while using my own unique styles that make it more visible.
