POST 1 INTRODUCTION / Margie Tabora

“It’s tempting to want the work of art, “explained,” but that term implies that we have solved all the complexities and contradictions inherent in the work of art and come to some final 'answer' about what it means. Works of art, like all things that emerge from the human imagination, don’t work like that.”

Art in itself is subjective. There is no wrong explanation unless it says otherwise. With art being such a vast medium, having to explain every piece, to me, starts to get boring. Art should have whimsy and mystery, and invite the viewer to give their own interpretation.

“Society’s expectation that the scholar deliver explanations creates a predicament for the art historian, because a work of art is not the effect of any cause, and is not easily lodged in a linear history.”

Art isn’t a straightforward medium. There are twists and turns that artist consciously make to keep their pieces interesting and attention-grabbing.

I haven’t given it much thought as to who inspires my art. Usually, I take a lot of my inspiration from comic books and graffiti works. I really enjoy the works of Winston. He creates this collage-style art, calling it punk-rock surrealism. One art style I would like to get to know more of is contemporary styles, and combine with graffiti. I think a style like that would be a good fit together.

My name is Margie. I'm a graphic design major and in my 3rd year. I've been mostly self-taught until I went to college to pursue it as a career. Originally, I wanted to study to become an illustrator, but with the help of professors and some experience, I've come to realize I'm more of a graphic designer and work well with my choice of art style, so now I am on the path to being a graphic designer. A lot of my works are mostly inspired by the early 2000s maximalist advertising and graffiti, falling in love with its throw-up style and its use of bright colors. What motivates me as an artist is really my passion for the arts and music. I've loved the concept of music and the arts for a long time. As the youngest, I was surrounded by different forms of art. My older sister works as a photographer, while my older brother (God rest his soul) was a musician and sound engineer. He would often show me different spots around NJ where there was graffiti, and that evolved into understanding, which then turned into a passion I wanted to be a part of.
My mental health plays a HUGE part in my art process and creation. As someone with ADD and ADHD, my brain and thoughts go 100MPH, and it's difficult to create one coherent concept. I like to just doodle, and hopefully something will come out of it. My feelings also play a big part in sketching and creating a concept. Some days are brighter than others, and I like to convey it through art so people can understand me a little.
