Week 3 Home Here Stephanie Rodas

 HOME HERE

Please visit the Exhibition in Visual Arts Gallery and write a 2-3 paragraph review of the exhibition. Choose two artworks in particular to describe in detail that are inspiring or interesting to you. Take photos of the works and the gallery and include the photos in your post. In our review please note the artist, title, and a description of the artworks and a few sentences about your response to the works. Why have you chosen these works to review? How might they connect to your own artwork?

The "HOME HERE" exhibition at NJCU was a pleasant exhibition full of artworks from 11 artists, addressing themes of history, memory, place, and location. I enjoyed the exhibition and each artwork individually, with all the artworks ranging in size and medium, the gallery felt full, cozy, and colorful. I was excited to look at all the art and the way they would interact with one another. The artwork, "Family Album," by Jessica Roberts, was the first artwork that made me stop and want to stay there staring at the scenery. I loved the location where it was set up; it was set up in a small corner, kind of like a dead end, and was surrounded by 3 walls. It really made me feel as if I had entered someones room or study. The table and chair that were in the right corner of the "room" looked like they had been used or vintage, aswell as the black lamp which highlighted the notebook and pen on the table that you could write on. Unfortunately, I was not aware that you could write in the notebook, but that aspect of the artwork made the whole piece feel more intimate and like you could immerse yourself in the work. While looking at the wall covered in vintage pictures of scenery and family, I was overcome with a sense of nostalgia and coziness. I felt like I was stepping into my grandparents' house, looking at family pictures. I wanted to stay and analyze every picture and enjoy the nostalgic, simple feeling. While taking the artwork in, I was talking to a staff member, and he pointed out a great point that the setup reminds him of being younger in a family member's home, only having simple art supplies to sketch and make art, surrounded by family pictures. That resonated with me because I completely understood what he was saying. It reminded me of being younger and creating art with any supplies, and it didn't matter because we just wanted to create. The vintage pictures helped with the nostalgic feel and made me want to appreciate my memories more. This artwork inspired me because it brought me back to simpler times and nostalgia that I tend to forget due to getting lost in the everyday busy schedule. It reminded me of the times I would create just from passion and impulse, which connect to my own artworks because most of my artworks are inspired by my environment or things from my life/personality.

Jin Jung's " Something Happened Here" at first caught my eye due to the large map on the wall, blue cyramic circles on the wall, and a table with the house on it with interactive spinning words. I really enjoyed looking at all the different elements of this artwork, but this was not the only reason I chose this artwork to review; it also inspired me. Reading what the blue cyramic circles on the wall said really got me to stay and think. I was shocked by all the events that happened throughout Jersey City and how many important people lived around here. I liked the idea of having small signs with facts, events, and recognition around cities and other places because it educates everyone about the area they are in, but also keeps the memories alive of good and bad things. But Jin Jungs explation on how she came to create her artwork and inspiration really made me understand them more. I really liked how Jin did the research for the city and area she lives in and brought it to light. I feel like we usually don't think to dive deep into places around us and just accept where we live for what it is. Jin did bring this to light for me, and the message she expressed, " A location is not merely a geographic coordinate; it is a collection of lived experiences," made me realize that I get caught up in my personal like that I have not been open-minded to my own location or shared experiences that make up my environment. This inspired me to take a deeper look into the simple things around me and slow down in my day-to-day life. The interactive house on the table had the sentence" Are We What We....."  but at the end of the sentence, there was an interactive spinning cylinder with words on it, such as Feel, See, Drink, etc. Letting viewers choose their own word to finish the sentence, this made my experience of reading the sentence and the experience of the artwork itself feel more intimate and personal. The intimate feel made me think of what the sentence meant in general, but also what it meant to me. This artwork made me realize how easily we as people move on from events and people very quickly, and tend to lose history, without taking the time to see what has happened around us, or not having signs to remind us.
