POST 2 INFLUENCES IN ART PRACTICE / Margie Tabora

1. Who are the 5 artists you chose?
The five artists I chose are Sarah Sze, Tanya Aguiniga, Julie Mehretu, Barry McGee, and Gaudalupe Maravilla.
2. What were the themes the artist addressed about making work?
Sarah Sze: The theme she addressed is how we humans travel through space without a second thought. Her installation was a way of showing everyday transit users different perspectives, and part of the installation, and it shows how change can happen within space.

Tanya Aguiniga: The theme she addressed is how someone's trauma can be the same as another person's, and how the connection in trauma can help empower, and also shows the flaws in the government. She creates these pieces to help people start a conversation about corruption and sacrifice between the borders of Tijuana and San Diego.
Julie Mehretu:
Barry McGee: The themes he addressed are the art of graffiti and how it plays a big role in urban culture, as well as how it creates an identity when on the
Guadalupe Maravilla: The theme he addressed is combining the traumas of his upbringing, as well as his own personal beliefs, as a way to heal old wounds and create his artwork based on that.

3. What were the challenges the artists faced in making their work?
Sarah Sze: She struggled with how she can find a way to get people to look at the artwork from different angles.
Tanya Aguiniga: She struggles with conveying the feelings of everyone connected by the border and how the government actually did more harm than good.
Julie Mehretu: She struggled with adjusting colors and shape during her installment of her mural. There were certain shapes and colors she wanted to add to make the mural feel more complete.
Barry McGee: The struggle was more of the competitive side to tagging. Competitive being more professional, adversiment vs a more freestyle tagging, to see which one will get more attention.
Guadalupe Maravilla: He struggled with his upbringing, having to migrate from different countries, and then, years later, dealing with cancer, but he eventually found solace in sound therapy through his struggles.
4. What were some inspirations you drew from the artists?
Sarah Sze: I found it amazing how she was able to create so many of the same artworks in different perspectives and positions,s yet keep it cohesive.
Tanya Aguiniga: How she went from being a furniture designer to a performative artist, evolving her voice from warmth and softness to a louder and more narrative direction.
Julie Mehretu: How she knew when she needed to add more to her artwork instead of keeping it as it was. She never wanted to stop until it was complete to her.
Barry McGee: How he remained humble after opening his studio up and still occasionally tags outside of his studio.
Guadalupe Maravilla: How he converted his traumas and struggles into a positive experience for others to feel and go through, if they are also struggling.

5. What were the things you would like to incorporate into your own work after watching these videos?
I would like to incorporate more political imagery, while also showing a more complex composition that will complement the imagery. Also, to get people to look closer and see the detail and small nods to certain themes of society.
