Art History Post- Sara Kolenovic

Think about the historical movements you have studied in art history courses and seen in your art explorations. Consider the places and times of art movements and historical events. Choose one art period that specifically moves you in some way. Write 2+ paragraphs about this movement/time period including specific examples that connect or influence your work. Include an image of your work next to an image of an artwork from the movement you are referring to, and reference them in your post. Explain why you feel drawn to the movement and the work.

I feel drawn to the work Minimalism because the work is so simple yet it has a lot of value. While growing up, I did multiple styles of work and aesthetics. This may be off topic but I would have my room in a multiple different colors and I would go for any trendy style (including art) to fell fulfilled. I get overstimulated by following trends and not living up to par what I would like to achieve. I heard of this style a lot while growing up and with classmates in art class, calling this art style a "insane asylum" but for me this was honestly the most eye-capturing piece of art I could ever stumble upon to. It was finally not to much. This is why I started being minimal with my work, while conveying my meaning unless if it needed to go a little bit more than minimal—never extreme though.

I attempt to not be minimal with colors, just with the amount of stuff I am placing upon my work. I never want my work to be a "overload" or overstimulating. I just want it to be impactful, for an example on one of my projects I am trying to as minimalistic as possible, all without overstepping the boundaries of it. I dislike complex, more rather simplicity shows more than complexity as it is hidden—meanwhile minimalism is straight to the point. There's is a photo of my recent work titled: The inner perspective versus third perspective (incomplete) in comparison to Donald Judd's work:

This shows the simplicity without going to complex since I use minimalism as an inspiration to not over do it.

  1. While I myself aren't particularly practiced or overly understanding of minimalism, I've noticed that one needs a good understanding of color theory and composition to land minimalism. They aren't just nonsensical shapes on a canvas. There's intention. I do appreciate the idea that your goals are to make art that isn't overstimulating but impactful all the same. I look forward to hearing you expand on your ideas about minimalism!
