Stephanie Rodas Art History Post

I believe the art period that best influences my own artwork and the one I am most drawn to is Suprematism. Suprematism is described as "Suprematism focused on the application of elementary geometric forms such as the square, the cross, and the circle." and tate.org.uk describes Suprematism as, "It prioritizes 'the supremacy of pure feeling' over representational art, featuring shapes that float against white backgrounds". Some key characteristics are non-objective, geometrical, abstract, colorful, simple, and flat. Kazimir Malevich is known as one of the founders, who wanted to create art with pure form meant to be universally understandable. I love that message and goal for artwork because I believe that is really important and something I strive for myself. I believe suprematism allows for all viewers to form their own perspective of the art with no context or cultural borders.

One of the reasons my artwork is influenced by Suprematism is that, as the definitions say, it focuses on geometric forms and the supremacy of pure feeling. In the process of creating my art, I tend to be drawn to geometric shapes. I like for shapes to be equally spaced or abstract around my art. I also strive to dive deeper into simplicity with my artwork. I have learned that my art can make an impact by focusing on simplicity and a few elements, rather than crowding it and making it busy. I tend to believe my art always needs "something else," when in reality I need to focus on pure feelings and intention. The magazine design I made uses a variety of circular images throughout the page, in random locations. This design is also very colorful and filled with geometric shapes, similar to Nadia K. Leger's work. Léger's work is filled with shapes such as triangles, circles, and rectangles, overlapping each other and in random locations. As well as a colorful background. My artwork has Suprematism qualities, such as featuring shapes, being colorful, simple, and flat.
