Sky Hopinka Art Talk - Diana Saintilme

Two Quotes:

“So my audience is a Native audience, my audience is an indigenous audience, my audience is one that understands things about certain belief systems or certain cultural values or certain communities that may have been oppressed, that may still be trying to figure out what their trajectory holds for them.”

The reason I chose this quote is because as artists we should have a clear understanding of who our intended audience is. In Sky Hopinka’s case, his intended audience are Native Americans, since they would have a clear understanding of what his work would be about. He has a clear intended audience in mind and designs his work so that it can reach his intended audience. If we want our art to send a message to a specific audience, we should clearly design our art so that it can be understood by our intended audience.

“The thing that guides what I do and how I do it is trying to be respectful of this history. I try to be very respectful of mores or rules, because for a long time that hasn't been the case from the larger world we live in.”

The reason I chose this quote is because it is a reminder to be respectful when creating our own work. When Sky Hopinka creates his work, he tries his best to be respectful to the history of the Natives. Instead of just designing based on everything he’s heard about Natives, he tries to be respectful to their authentic history, not what everyone thinks. When designing our own work, I believe it is important that we design with respect and try not to create anything that would be offensive to our audience or those outside of our audience.

Questions:

How does Sky Hopinka use his medium of choice?

Sky Hopinka’s medium of choice are videos. The way he uses videos is by manipulating them by using visual manipulation and overlays. He also adds color and sounds to his videos in order to draw his audience into his work.

What inspired him to use video?

What inspires him to use video is how he can capture what he wants while on a trip or whenever he feels inspired. He is also in control of what he captures and he can edit and manipulate clips together as he feels right. Since he is editing videos that he captures himself, it puts him more in control of what he wants to do with them rather than editing someone else’s video.

What material/medium/process do you use and how?

The material I work with is a computer to create my digital artworks with the program I usually use being Adobe Illustrator. I use Illustrator to create digital designs that get my message across. The process for creating my design usually starts with a single thought and then I think of ways to express my thought in a way that others would understand it. Furthermore, I use shapes and use bold colors that stand out to create my designs.

What inspired you to make your work that way?

What inspires me to create my work this way is how I can express my creativity through digital work. There’s a certain sense of freedom that I get when I create my work digitally. When designing digitally, I feel like I can be both creative and experimental with my work and if something goes wrong and can just delete it and it leaves no trace on the screen. With digital design, I feel like I have the freedom to create my work in expressive ways and also design them so that others would understand my work.
