HOME IS HERE
The exhibition had many different artists that used a variety of mediums to express themselves, but looking at the entirety of the exhibition two central themes came to mind, history and home. Each and every piece in this exhibition had some form of history or home attached to it's central theme giving way to a sense of intimacy, personhood and reflection on the people in that shared history. Two pieces that collectively exhibit these central themes are Jennifer Roberts' Family Album and Jaz Graf's Phantom Entanglement. As the name suggests Jennifer Roberts' Family Album pushes it's themes more toward the family oriented side of the piece and Jaz Graf's Phantom Entanglement's subject matter angles towards history and how were connected to it.
Jaz Graf's Phantom Entanglement centers on the connection of family throughout history and how the effects of family ripple throughout the generations, creating a multi generational story visualized via paper and textiles. To me it showed not only how connected family history is to each person, but also how almost cage like it can be, that history surrounding that family like a hanging shadow that can never truly leave.
Jennifer Roberts' Family Album is not only a sort of reclamation of photos that the artist lost, but also a reclamation of memories that could otherwise be long forgotten. By painting these memories there is a revival of these memories through art. This piece to me speaks of home and the countless memories cherished inside of it.
