Post 2 -Jordan C. INFLUENCES IN ART PRACTICE

For this assignment, I watched five artists featured on Art21: Njideka Akunyili Crosby, Ragnar Kjartansson, Candice Lin, Lucy Raven, and Anne Imhof. Each artist approaches their work differently, but they all share a deep commitment to process, experimentation, and meaning behind what they create.

One major theme that stood out across the videos was the importance of identity and personal experience in shaping artwork. Njideka Akunyili Crosby spoke about blending cultures and memory into her paintings, showing how personal history can become a powerful visual language. Ragnar Kjartansson explored repetition and emotion in performance, highlighting endurance and vulnerability as part of the artistic process. Candice Lin focused on materials and how they carry historical and cultural meaning, while Lucy Raven examined environment and systems within her work. Anne Imhof demonstrated how large-scale performance pieces require collaboration, trust, and risk-taking.

The artists also discussed challenges they face in creating their work. Many of them mentioned balancing strong conceptual ideas with the realities of execution. There is also vulnerability involved, especially when work is deeply personal or performed live in front of an audience. Pushing materials, experimenting with scale, and stepping into unfamiliar territory requires confidence and resilience. Several artists reflected on periods of doubt before fully developing their artistic voice.

From watching these interviews, I was inspired to think more deeply about my own process. I realized that experimentation and patience are essential, and that the process itself can be just as meaningful as the final product. I was also reminded that authenticity matters AND drawing from lived experience can make work more impactful. Art does not have to simply look good; it can question, research, and communicate something deeper.

After watching these videos, I would like to incorporate more intentional storytelling into my own work. I want to take more risks creatively and allow myself to experiment without fear of failure. I also hope to be more patient with my ideas and trust the process, understanding that strong work develops over time. Overall, these artists encouraged me to think more critically about what my art says and how I can grow with greater confidence in my practice.
