Proposal Draft - Diana Saintilme

For my Spring 2026 BFA Exhibition, I will be exploring the theme of the struggles to find harmony and balance when it comes to breaking the gender binary. In order to explore this theme, I will be using the concept of the impossibility of utopia and the struggles of being masculine and feminine. By combining these two concepts, I will highlight the similarities in order to get my message across. Using design apps such as Adobe Illustrator and InDesign, I will be creating a series of cutouts and animations that discuss both themes and how they relate to each other.

For my exhibit, I will create multiple cutouts that will be mounted onto foamboards that will be stuck onto the wall that will give the illusion that the cutout is popping off the wall. I will also be creating two animations. One animation will depict the words masculine and feminine blending with each other and the other will be an animation of an endless stairway. Along with the cutouts and the animations, I will also be creating three cards similar to prayer cards. Two cards, titled Masculine and Feminine each depict stereotypical roles for each gender and the third card, titled Breaking Boundaries, that list ways to break the mold. Altogether, I want my exhibition to tell a story of the hidden struggles of those who are struggling to find their identity in a world that expects them to be something else.
