Sky Hopinka Talk - Javier Morales

Choose two quotes or ideas that stood out to you

"The thing that guides what I do and how I do it is trying to be respectful of this history. I try to be very respectful of mores or rules, because for a long time that hasn't been the case from the larger world we live in."

I picked this one because I mostly do the same when I'm trying to do my work, I always make sure that the stuff that I would like to work on or with is not going top be misunderstood or that I'm trying to make something controversial by disrespecting history or cultures and which making research of history for projects that's what mostly artists does.

"I never really thought too much about fine arts or things like that probably until my twenties."

This stood out to me since I didn't really think of studying a career that goes with art since my environment is completely different and I also started thinking about it when I was about to finish high school and reading that makes me thing about how artists begun creating art.

1. How does Sky Hopinka use his medium of choice?

He uses video and film in an experimental way making like a narrative and also working a lot with indigenous history, myths and traditional beliefs.

2. What inspired him to use video?

He got inspired by traditional cultures by learning the indigenous language and realizing that he could work with it since it can have correlation with making video.

3. What material/medium/process do you use and how?

Mostly I use adobe illustrator by being my main platform also, before starting working on digital I do brainstorm and also sketch a bunch of ideas that I would end up using them for the final product and also looking for some inspiration from other works from other artists.

4. What inspired you to make your work that way?

Most of the things that inspired me was scary movies posters and also the rock and metal bands visualizers I always had a weird relationship with the "dark" stuff since I used to be scared of it when I was younger but then I got the realization that how different is and the amount of work that it needs and that's when that fear turned into admiration and making me want to create work like that or even more "unique and better"
