Artist Statement/Bio(Rough Draft): Joann Nunez

Bio:
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Joann Nunez is currently based in New Jersey. Growing up, she wrote stories like her older sister, but she found her own way of creating stories through other mediums, painting, drawing, and digital illustration. Her art education began in her sophomore year at Bayonne High School, and in her senior year she was awarded, Fine & Performing Arts Art Achievement Award. She continues at New Jersey City University as an illustration major. She writes and illustrates her own stories taking inspiration from cartoons she watched as a kid and gothic fashion trends from the 1990s.

Statement:
I typically create my artwork digitally; however, I've used other mediums in the past such as gouache, charcoal, and ceramics. The main thing that I use is Procreate on iPad, using a variety of brushes that they offer and brushes that I download in order to elevate a piece. I have a passion for creating inspiration boards based on my recent projects. If I need a specific pose, either I ‘Frankenstein’ photographs together or look at references. I would describe my style as semi-realistic with cartoonish features. My process begins with naming my character; at that point I have a semi-idea of how I want them to look. For each of my characters, my goal is to have different silhouettes, personalities, and allows them to have diversely unique looks. My process also includes a curated playlist that would be part of a scene or it’s a song that relates to the character. When I am writing or creating a story, I look back on things that I’ve enjoyed growing up like Scooby-Doo: Mystery Incorporated.

As a storyteller, my goal is to bring my characters to life, by doing so I get to experiment and draw them in different situations, while also building a world around themthat connects to an overarching plotline. I base my ideas on horror/romance movies or shows that inspire me. This allows me to continue working on my own work and see flaws within it, and allows me to fix them. Nowadays, the media tries too hard to push representation, even if it doesn’t fit in the story, yet years ago it came easy. This painted certain people as ‘villains’ and used monsters as scapegoats. My graphic novel focuses on vampires, which within itself is political, vampires within themselves are a representation of power, sensuality, and frames the idea of the “other”. However, I want to twist that narrative and make them the ‘good guys’, fighting the antagonist. While also allowing my characters remain grounded and have their own struggles. I would hope that my work is received well enough to create an audience that resonates with them. I want my audience to feel engulfed into the world that I created. I hope that my work continues to inspire people and allows them to fully and freely be themselves. My goal is to create art and tell stories that capture the human experience through the lens of otherness.
