Quotes from Sky Hopinka:
"I wasn't able to look at it critically until years later, but the structure of grammar, the structure of language, all the these different rules or approaches to learning language- I could see myself applying those same things to how I approach video."
"Language has always been a foundation for approaching video and storytelling and it continues to be so and in different ways."
These quotes from Hopinka resonate with me a lot, because I too am fascinated with language, and the culture behind it. Art should speak to you through what it is showing you, and an interesting part is the viewer has to interpret and decipher what is encoded. Similarly to Hopinka, but different, I take inspiration from reading the Bible. It has also helped me with language and reading, and storytelling in many ways. I believe also that there is revelation from God helping me along the way in reading and understanding it, almost like a spiritual language. I don't think I can think the way I think without reading those books, and have this creativity with words and figurative language.
Hopinka uses film and makes video, and takes inspiration from mythologies and traditions of the Ho-Chunk nation.
The material I use is usually Photoshop or Illustrator, and my notes. I feel like I need to research and explore what I am making art on every time, and a even a little deeper than people will usually go. First I would take down my notes, and then start creating, I am creator where I will get inspiration from just looking at how far I have come. I wouldn't have the exact idea until I jump into it and start my process. I like to try new things and change and new beginnings, it gives me a fresh start feel. From the start to finish my art would look different.
I honestly get inspired by just looking at a bunch of art, and just brainstorming. I feel like I have this gift from God to make something aesthetic and just have a natural eye for making art. I think it's because I am really observant, to colors, to the world, to everything. I also love working with music on as well I get in that flow state when I listen to my type of music.
