The exhibition was an incredible experience to see in person and watching all the artist talk about their works and the story behind of each of them. I also noticed that the theme of the gallery heavily focused on family and history. Throughout the whole show were two pieces of art that really caught my attention which happen to be Jaz Graf’s Phantom Entanglement and Cheryl Riley’s Appropriation Bag.
(Jaz Graf’s Phantom Entanglement)
(Cheryl Riley’s Appropriation Bag)
Jaz Graf’s Phantom Entanglement gives off a somewhat grim and gothic aesthetic in the art and making appear as a door to the other side. It however retains a certain aspect of beauty and elegance that I can’t help but admire so much. Almost makes me inspired to draw to draw more dark and angsty artwork with heart.
This second art piece is called the Appropriation bag where to showcases all kinds drawings and pictures of Black women history throughout the years. This genuinely makes appreciate the hardships and social status that female African Americans had to go through. knowing how sacred and powerful their history is, even by displaying its entire history on a bag.
