 Introduction Post- Jordan C.

Quotes from Smarthistory: “Why Art History Isn’t Like Math”

“Art history isn’t like math, there isn’t always a single right answer.”
This quote sntood out to me because it reminds me that art isn’t about being “right” or “wrong.” Everyone experiences and understands art differently, and that’s what makes it interesting. When I make work, especially photography, I like knowing that people can see different meanings or emotions depending on their own perspective.

“Meaning in art is constructed, not discovered.”
I liked this quote because it explains how meaning in art comes from context and interpretation, not just the artist. It made me think about how the images I create don’t just show what’s happening and how they help shape how people understand the moment or story being told.

My name is Jordan, and I’m an artist and photographer with a strong focus on sports photography and visual storytelling. I’ve played sports my entire life, which heavily influences the way I approach my work. Being around athletes and competitive environments has shaped how I see moments, emotions, and movement, and I try to capture that authenticity in my images. Along with photography, I’m also interested in design and creative media as ways to tell deeper stories through visuals.

One artist who influences my work is Gordon Parks. I really admire how he used photography to tell powerful stories and bring attention to real social issues. I’ve definitely looked to art and art history throughout my art education and practice, especially photography and design. I’m interested in exploring more documentary photographysports photography as storytelling, and graphic design that uses symbolism to communicate deeper ideas.

I’m currently studying art and design, and most of my work focuses on photography and visual storytelling, especially sports photography. I try to capture more than just action and I want my images to reflect emotion, identity, and the reality of being an athlete. My background in sports plays a big role in how I connect with the subjects I photograph. Artists like Gordon Parks inspire me to think deeper about what my work can say beyond aesthetics. I’m passionate about issues like representation, opportunity, and identity, particularly within sports and youth culture. Creating art allows me to highlight moments and stories that often go unnoticed, and learning about art history pushes me to be more intentional with how I create and communicate meaning through my work.
