Assignment 1

My name is Imani Mills, I am from Newark, New Jersey. I am a photography major, and photography is my main form of artistic expression. I became interested in photography because I want to show people how I view the world through my own eyes, especially by finding something new within old. In some of my artwork, I focus on how others express their identity capturing moment when people take off the masks they wear to hide their true selves. Recently, I have also started exploring digital art, where I create animated style drawing of people I know.

                                            - digital camera          - this work is about the morning after a snowy day I                                                                                          wanted to capture the beauty and silent morning that                                                                                            came.
                                      - digital camera    - I was expired by always being in the car and                                                                                                always having a deep conversation with my family member or                                                                           sometime we don't talk at all but the ride is enjoyable just by                                                                             listening to music.
                                             - digital camera     - this one is the same concept with the one above this image                                                                               and have a same meaning to it
                    - Graphic art    - I use Ibis Paint X   - this work is of me and my sister. this was                                                                                                         something new that I wanted to try because I'm not                                                                                        good at drawing on computer and this was the results after                                                                                 ten to twenty tries to get it right
                                 - digital camera     - this is one of my photo from a project I'm working on that have to                                                                     do with emotional and the eyes.
                                        - digital camera    - this work is about the way a person express them selves

The artist who influenced my artwork the most is Carrie Mae Weems.  Her work help me look at art in a new light and gave me a deeper understanding of what art can communicate. Through her photography, she reveals the truth and the stories that exist between the lines, she is not afraid to cross boundaries. whether addressing racial, social, or political issues, Weems understands which line to cross and how to make her work speak louder than words. As a photography student, I want my work to carry strong meaning and reach people in the same powerful way her work does.

The first quote I chose was "People are sexually aroused by pictures and sculptures, they break pictures and sculptures, they mutilate them, kiss them, cry before them, and go on journeys to them, they are calmed by them, stirred by them, and incited to revolt. they give thanks by means of them, expect to be elevated by them, and are moved to the highest level of empathy and fear." by David Freedberg, The Power of Images
    - I chose this quote because it show how powerful art can be in affecting people emotionally and physically. when a piece of art can make someone feel such strong emotions just by looking at it, it show how much time, patience, and intention the artist put into the work. Art that can move people in this way carries meaning and power beyond the image itself. it show that art is not just something to look at, but something to feel, experience, and connect with on a deeper level.

The second quote I chose was, "The work of art emerges at once out of a collectivity and out of an individual consciousness, and grappling with just one of those the individual or the collective at a particular moment in history."
    - This quote stood out to me because it explains how art come from both the artist and the world around them. once we begin to understand what our art means to us personally and how it affects others, we start to understand its purpose and impact. Art does not exist in isolation, it reflects personal experiences while also responding to social, cultural, or historical moments. when we recognize this connection, we can better understand whether our work functions as art and what message it communicates.
